Dear David,

I admire your reviews, and Holland House Books who are publishing my debut novel on 17 May 2017 have asked me to contact reviewers and bloggers. It is a literary novel about a cult set in Minehead and on Exmoor, but not a thriller ? the seduction of the main character is gradual, insidious. The publisher's email address is: [email protected], and he can provide the book in print, pdf or kindle form. There are some details and a few extra bits and pieces on my (faultily set-up) website: judybirkbeck.wordpress.com, if you want a taste of my style.

Looking forward to your reply,

Kind regards,

Judy Birkbeck

Dear David James, I've just sent you an explanation of why I haven't been in touch since I won the inaugural Quagga Prize for Literary Fiction. When my darling wife died suddenly in May 2015 I was taken by ambulance to a psychiatric hospital in Guildford where I was diagnosed with extreme depression, psychosis and paranoia. I was convinced that eating food was a plot to undermine my sense of self, so I stopped eating. Lost a ton of weight. Lost my vocabulary and the names of my closest friends. Was mentally and physically frail for many months after I was discharged from hospital. Without the helpof our daughters I probably wouldn't have survived. Now I'd like to apologise to Pater Cowlam who won the Quagga Prize in 2015. I was in no condition to reply when he sent me a message. Very best wishes, Enver Carim

You are OK if you have contributed to the cost of production 'in whole or in part.' I's say you qualify. Good luck!

Dear David

I am interested in entering my debut novel 'The Girl at the End of the Road' for the 2016 Quagga Books prize, but am not sure if it qualifies. It was published by Instant Apostle in March this year. I paid a small amount of money up front to help with editorial and book cover costs (475) and was contracted to purchase 200 books at half price which I could then sell at full price and recoup the initial fee. Instant Apostle is a small independent publisher rather than a self-publishing business. I give below the Amazon link and would be grateful if you could let me know if I can enter your comeptition.

With best wishes

Thanks for offering me the chance to review Avalon, but I'm not sure it's quite up my street. I read and review literary novels mainly (see website themes) and am bogged down at present with this year's Quagga Prize entrants. Good luck anyway with finding a suitable reviewer!

Vanessa Morgan

Hi David,

My latest book Avalon: a Heartwarming True Cat Story

just came out. It's about my Turkish Van cat who was both a movie star and

a cartoon character.

Would you like to review this memoir? I'd be happy to send you a kindle, epub

or pdf file.

Here's the blurb:

Some cats need nine lives to make a difference. Avalon only needed one.

From Amazon bestselling author Vanessa Morgan, Avalon is the

heartwarming and once-in-a-lifetime love story of a girl and her

neurotic Turkish Van cat.

With humor, the author details how Avalon made other creatures cringe

in distress whenever he was around, how he threw her dates out by

means of special techniques, and how he rendered it almost impossible

for her to leave the house. Avalon was so incorrigible that even her

landlord ordered her to get rid of him. But beneath Avalon's demonic

boisterousness, Vanessa recognized her own flaws and insecurities, and

she understood that abandoning Avalon would be the worst she could do

to him. Thanks to her unswerving loyalty, Avalon transformed into a

tender feline, and even landed a major role in a horror movie. In

turn, Avalon made it his mission to be there for his human companion.

Avalon is a memoir for anyone who has ever been obsessively in love with a pet.

Have a look at the cover and the Amazon page here:

Thanks so much for considering this. Have a lovely day :-)

Hello Enver,

No problems. Date November 4; time 6.30; place The Star of Kings. On November 1, I'm sending Judge's Reports out to all entrants. The gig as you call it is an informal discussion held monthly, but on November 4 we will be treating Prizes for Indies, starting of course with The Presentation. If you agree I'd like to read the first paragraph of The Price of an Education, say a few words about it and deliver the Certificate and the Prize money. I'll be wearing a named badge, plus my Dickens Fellowship carnation. You are of course welcome to stay and join in the discussion. Hasta la vista!

Dear David,

Delighted to learn that my novel, Alby and Me, has been selected as runner-up for rthe Quagga gold medal. I note in the message from Enver Carim that an award ceremony is planned for November 4. I may have a problem making that date as I have a hospital appointment which may not be changeable,Also I was wondering if you will be issuing any publicity material to the media, and if and when you would like me to do anything locally. Regards, John

Hello David,

I've just read your report on John C. Bird's runner-up novel for the Quagga Prize for Literary Fiction, Alby and Me, but cannot find the report on the Prize winner, my book, The Price of an Education. Please let me know: where should I look?

By the way, the awards ceremony at the Star of Kings in York Way, London N1 - has the date, 4 November, been confirmed? At what time? I'll have to catch a train and travel on the Underground to get there, so I'd like to the definite time and date. Please respond. Many thanks. Enver

Hello David,

I was thinking about entering The Road to London for the Quagga Prize, however, I don't know if it qualifies on two grounds: it is not self published, but published by an independent publishers (three actually, Glastonbury Publishing, Mirador, Netherworld Books) and it was published on 25th November 2013 (we put all our eggs in one basked with the Booker, so, were not looking for other prizes... Hopes smashed, but still...)

Kind regards,

Adriano

Hello David - I tracked you down via the Awesome Indies site and hope you might be interested in reviewing my Scottish coming-of-age novel published 2012 'A Kettle of Fish.' It has 31 reviews on Amazon 4 or 5 star and I'd like to go for the AI badge, hence my request. I can send you a paperback copy if you think it's up your street. More details at http://alibacon.com/kettleoffish/. Having read about the Quagga prize I may well submit it for that too, but would appreciate your response as regards a review. Good to see someone championing literary fiction! Thanks for your time. Ali B

I believe that I am writing "literary fiction" for 'bright children between the ages of 10 and 110'. My degree was in English language and literature and I completed three postgraduate years on a PhD thesis entitled "Chaucer's Poetic Uses of his Native Vocabulary." I have taught writing for most of my life, was published by Penguin in the 1970s, and now choose to self-publish in e-form only (for several reasons). My "Myrddin's Heir" series of books contain chapter notes on matters linguistic, literary,tragical-comical-historical-pastoral... In short, do you accept entries in e-form? (or am I still ahead of the times?!) xx

Dear Enver,

Thanks for your response.

Your novel would seem to fit the literary fiction criteria perfectly, so please send as soon as possible - the earlier the better. If I understand you correctly you may well be writing another novel in the According to Queeney mode (Beryl Bainbridge) - one I liked very much.

Best regards,

Dave

Hello David James,

By the time I heard about the Quagga Prize for Literary Fiction from the Alliance of Independent Authors, of which I am a member, my novel The Price of an Education had already been typeset. I visited the Quagga website and two things decided me to enter the 2014 competition. The first was the definition I read there of 'literary fiction' which seemed to describe in general terms the structure and flow of my novel, especially your words: 'To be considered literary, a work should ideally be complex, literate, multi-layered and wrestle with universal problems.' And: 'literary fiction, by its nature, allows itself to dawdle, to linger on stray beauties even at the risk of losing its way'.

The second thing was your essay 'The Theme of Commemoration in the Work of Samuel Johnson', particularly the line in which Johnson confided to Boswell: 'My wife told me I might lye with as many women as I pleased provided I loved her alone'. 'The marriage was obviously one of convenience and in a sense no marriage at all.' His wife Tetty had come to the marriage with a dowry of 600. At the core of my novel more than two centuries later is a mutually convenient financial/sexual relationship from which all else in springs.

Am I barking up the wrong tree to be entering the Quagga 2014 competition?

I look forward to your reply.

Many thanks.

Enver Carim

Congratulations, Dave, on setting up Quagga Books and establishing the new Quagga prize for an independently published literary novel. What a wonderful idea. I'll ensure all the reviewers and editors at Fiction Feedback are aware of the prize so we can tell any authors who might be interested.
